When you enter your first real charm code, you get a charm tree box. You can then enter the forest and go back every 6 hours. You can then search for the first 5 virtual charms.

For the first 8 charms you enter, each one "unlocks" another row of virtual charms you can search for. You must enter at least 8 real charm codes to be able to search for all 40 virtual charms. For charms 9-10, you get 100 KC. For charms 11-13, you get 200 KC. For charms 14-15, you get 300 KC. As a special prize, you get a Fairy Falls Fountain when you enter your 16th real charm. For charms 17-19 you get 400 KC. Charms 20-23 you get 500 KC. Finally, a Grand Charmling Tree (outdoors only) for your 24th (and final REAL charm).

When you enter the forest it's just like gem hunting. You pick one of four paths, and then click on fairies (like the rocks in the gem mines). You get prizes - you can get a recipe food, virtual charm, Sap Glop, Bad Fairy (you get no prize), 100 KC, Charm Candy, Magic Charm Forest Bad Fairy T-shirt, or a Magic Charm Forest Good Fairy T-shirt. You can also find a key that opens up the opportunity to get 2-5 prizes instead of the usual one.

If you find a key, you have to click on the key and end up back in the forest. You have to then look around the forest for a 'secret' door. It will get drawn in Sparkle Dust, and then you click the key on the door.

The virtual charms are 40 different online charms that go in your charm tree box/charm armoire/charm credenza. They are different than the real charms. As you collect the different virtual charms, you get special prizes like Charm Forest Crystal, Dining Chair, Dining Table, Floor, Rainbow Plant, Wallpaper, Fairy Topiary, and Magic Charm Forest Tiara.
